Physical Description | Rayek has a long-legged, athletic build; and is lean but well-muscled. He has notable blade scarring on left creek, scarring present on both arms and back, and larger blade scar to left side chest. None of which are impeding. He has the forehead V ridge - that easily differentiates him from a Vulcan. Prior to his courtship with Tess (his wife) Rayek was always clean shaven with immaculate smoothed hair in the standard Romulan military style. Since he learned of Tess' preference for a more tousled look, he often looks like he just got out of bed, with a little more than a 5 o'clock shadow scruff on his features. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | Rayek is a 39-year-old Romulan, born on Romulus in 2360. Rayek grew up from a young age being groomed for star navy command, and had little in the way of outside hobbies; though as a late teen he was known to have a fondness for Romulan ale and an absurd interest in all things Human, including their women. Rayek is the eldest son of former Proconsul Talen tr'Lhoell, an 'old school' Romulan who used to try to sway the Senate away from the reforms that the Emperor was initiating. Rayek is the eldest of three children. After mandatory military service, Rayek joined the Tal Shiar, where his latent telepathic abilities were discovered and then used secretly for the Praetor. Rayek was kept 'in-check' by his handler through the threat to Rayek's family. For a while, after a mission gone bad, Rayek and his father were both imprisoned for treason without trial. During this time Hobus exploded and Rayek despaired believing his family were all dead. After Hobus, Rayek was released to work for the remains of the Tal Shiar and was sent to Federation lands to watch over an Ambassador who they feared might attempt to seize control by claiming kinship to the late Emperor. The Ambassador fell ill and Rayek grew close to the Starfleet doctor (Dr. Saqa7 Mountain-Kahn) who treated the Ambassador until his death from Pa'nar. When it was time to return to Romulan territory which was then in a state of civil war with factions fighting for control of what had been the Empire, Rayek received a secret message warning him of plans for his assassination to ensure 'empire secrets' So rather than return, Rayek defected thinking he would follow his heart and court the doctor (Saqa7) who first suggested he stay. But to court her he felt he needed to prove his worth and so must be of equal or higher rank. For that he needed to join Starfleet. But his applications were initially declined. It took three years to get into Starfleet - as enlisted. But it was a start. After a year rising through the enlisted ranks, Rayek was pleased to see his hard work and past experience pay off as he was made a commissioned officer at the rank of Lieutenant Commander and give the position of First Office of a space station name Katra. Though his attempt to court Dr. Mountain-Kahn failed, during his time on Katra, he met Tess Moreno, another doctor, who he eventually realized he loved (even more than Saqa7) and in a whirlwind romance they married and have since had one child together. |
Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: limited telepathic abilities. (surface thoughts or triggering pain receptors only within the same room/ search of deeper memories when performing a Vulcan Mind Meld) excellent memory and recall of details keen observer Languages spoken/written: Romulan (native - both dialects), Federation Standard (self-taught), Klingon (self-taught), learning Ba'ku. Read lips (Romulan (both dialects) and Federation standard) Loyal (and is striving to be honest in all dealings) Strong work ethic (anything he does, he strives for excellence in) Weaknesses: over protective of his family and friends (Tess & Fvienn above all) somewhat biased against Vulcans has difficult socializing and trusting others / paranoid (especially when it comes to other Romulans - other than his own friends and family) |
Ambitions | In his youth, his ambition had been to gain his father's approval by becoming a high-ranking Military officer. After joining the Tal Shiar and discovering his telepathic ability, his ambition was to survive the abuse, and keep his family safe (since one friend had already been killed to teach Rayek a lesson). As a Starfleet enlistee Rayek's goal had been to reach rank of Lieutenant so that he could court Dr. Mountain-Kahn. After realizing he'd been chasing the wrong woman, Rayek's ambition was to marry and start a family with Tess. Now, after waking to discover that has become separated from his family, Rayek's goal is to find a way back to his own dimension and to his family and friends once more. |
Hobbies & Interests | Rayek doesn't have many hobbies. He studies people. Researches them and learning their strength, weaknesses and their motivations. While he was in the Tal'Shiar he did this to discover how best to manipulate them and ensure he had the advantage; now it's done to better understand others so that he can fit in more with people and make a connection with them. Rayek studies and practices the skills of computer hacking (especially in regards to security and tactical systems) He knows and practices several forms of martial arts, melee weapons as well as standard firearms (phasers and disruptors). When he transferred to Katra he was gifted a lirpa and has been slowly learning that weapon. He still considers himself a novice with it - despite knowing several lethal maneuvers with it. He is learning Ba'ku language and culture from Tess and her older brothers. Rayek also bowls (he was the Captain of Katra's bowling team). |
Personal History | Rayek is a 39-year-old Romulan, born on Romulus in 2360. Rayek grew up from a young age being groomed for star navy command, and had little in the way of outside hobbies, though he was known to have a fondness for Romulan ale and an absurd fetish for Terran women. Rayek is the eldest son of former Proconsul Talen tr'Lhoell, an 'old school' Romulan who used to try to sway the Senate away from the reforms that the Emperor was initiating. Rayek is the eldest of three children. His sister Kemala is the middle child. Rayek was closest to Kemala - though as a teen he found her to be not much other than a nuisance. His youngest sibling is named Telmuk, and though Rayek help raise him, he always felt disconnected with his brother. Nearing the end of his mandatory military service within the Romulan Star Navy (2380, at the age of 20), Rayek was approached by the Tal Shiar and offered a chance to try-out for the rather exclusive secret police. Rayek jumped at the opportunity. He successfully passed their testing and while in training there, his latent telepathic ability was discovered. Given Romulan bias, Rayek's ability was kept hushed, but taken advantage of by the Praetor at the time (Praetor Chulan - alternate dimension name). Rayek however was poorly treated with threats made regarding his parents and siblings to keep him in line. To keep them safe, he distanced himself from the family and did as ordered. He became quite the monster. (This is Rayek's initial start point - he was an NPC Romulan villian on the yahoogroups game 'USS Courage'. My main character was Dr. Saqa7 Mountain. I left the game after about a year and half when my writing partner (Jureen Kahn) at the time had a falling out with the game master. I've since played the pair - Saqa7 and Rayek - on three other sites building their history with each site. I've also switched which was main and which the NPC) For a while (~6-8 months 2387-88), after failing a rather critical mission, Rayek was imprisoned (along with his father) for treason. He was drugged with an inhibitor to negate his telepathic abilities. It was only after Hobus exploded (2388) killing his mother and siblings (or so he thought) that he was released by the remaining government so that his skills could be used once more. His father was kept imprisoned to ensure Rayek's obedience while the Romulan operative traveled the Federation territory undercover as an Ambassadorial guard. A few years later (2391), he received word that the prison where his father was being held rioted. His father was reported killed in the ensuing violence. Shortly after this, the Ambassador Rayek was guarding grew ill and after a long and painful time eventually died of Pa'nar (2392). Rayek was ordered back to Romulus. However, an informant of his told of how Rayek was being slated for execution upon his return. Rayek, who had always been loyal to the Romulan Empire, had during the time spent with the Federation doctor who was treating the Ambassador realized he'd developed feelings for her (not unexpected given his Earther fetish). When she suggested to him during his farewell to her, that he didn't have to go.. that he could stay, and that she would vouch for him, he discovered that love was stronger than loyalty. He would rather defect and be with her than return to Romulan lands. Dr. Mountain-Kahn true to her offer vouched for him as he negotiated with former enemies, the Federation, to defect. He, of course, was interrogated (far more 'humanely' than any interrogation he had ever seen conducted) during which Rayek was honest about his intentions to change loyalties to the Federation. When asked why - he claimed he did it for love. That earned more than a few chuckles. But no matter how many times the question was asked - his answer was the same. The only thing Rayek did keep hidden was his telepathic ability. To aid in this he found and underground source that would replicate the same telepathic inhibitor drug he'd been give while in prison. On whole, the process to defect took just over a year. (2393). Rayek at this point was 33 years old. Almost immediately upon being granted his 'freedom' (he suspected he would be constantly watched), Rayek traveled to Earth and applied to join Starfleet as a commissioned officer (Rayek had the equivalent training he felt) but he was denied multiple times (2393-2394) until lastly Rayek applied as an enlisted crewman. This was approved, and after a year and half of what should have been only a 6-month boot-camp Rayek passed their required training (2394-95). Rayek had struggled with the concept of the Prime Directive and how it applied to all Starfleet activities, but he was tenacious and refused to give up. Finally, he passed Starfleet Technical Service Academy training (Sept 2395). In October 2395, Rayek was assigned as a sec/tac crewman to the USS Challenger. From that point, the former Tal Shiar operative worked hard to prove himself worthy of the Captain and crew's trust. His goal in Starfleet was to make it to at least Lieutenant. Only then could he conceivably court Dr. Saqa7 Mountain-Kahn. He figured he would work a few years as enlisted and then put in for a transfer to commissioned. Unfortunately, Rayek was barely on the ship a day before the ship's medical doctor discovered his telepathy (and his growing addiction to the inhibitor drug which kept it in check) and in a surprising turn offered to help him keep his ability secret from the general crew (though Starfleet HQ and the ships Command Staff were of course informed). Dr. Vaughn also helped him keep the ability dormant through prescribed drugs and later a neural blocker until a serious head injury made all those methods ineffective. He had to turn to telepathic crewmates for assistance in order to regain his lapsed control of his ability. Rayek served a year on Challenger rising rapidly through the ranks from Crewman to Senior Chief Petty Officer (the highest enlisted position he could go while on the ship). Then the unbelievable happened Starfleet recognized his year of tireless work and loyalty. He was offered a position - a position of true leadership as the First Officer (with a rank of Lieutenant Commander) of a newly built space station in the Gamma Quadrant, named Katra Station (October 2396). It was during his time on Katra that Rayek met Tess, who he courted in a whirlwind romance, after he was devastated to be rejected by Saqa7 and learning that Saqa7's missing spouse... was another woman! - an inconceivable notion to the strait-laced Romulan. The strength of his affection for Tess was somewhat problematic as it seemed Rayek would do almost anything to protect her. In a Wadi game of Allamaraine, Rayek purposefully shoved another crewmember into the path of a glowing orb in order to keep it from touching Tess. Though it was just a game the reaction from the crew was overwhelming. Rayek had gone from being accepted by the crew to being a pariah instantly. It took months to rebuild even a small manner of trust once more, only to have it come crashing down again when his need to protect his now wife (married Jan 2 2398) and unborn child lead him to disobey standard Federation procedure. He fired on a visiting First Contact vessel first because they were targeting the room where Tess and the station's Captain were meeting with a refugee from that ship, threatening to shoot if the refugee wasn't handed over. Rayek shot first, his burst striking just as the 'enemy' ship began charging their weapons to fire. Rayek believed he had just saved the station. Review of the video footage however was inconclusive as to whether the other ship had begun its firing process before Rayek, or if his actions had forced the visiting ship to attempt to defend itself. The argument by prosecutors was that the shields would have likely protected the station well-enough for that first volley. Starfleet procedure stipulated that Rayek should have waited until the other ship fired before defending the station. Rayek was imprisoned on the station for 2 months while the events were discussed by Starfleet Command. Prosecutors were looking for him to be dishonorably discharged from the fleet and imprisoned at a Federation prison for up to 10 years. But both of his Starfleet Captains spoke up on his behalf, and his wife, and instead Rayek was only demoted down to Ensign and removed from Bridge access. He was assigned to working security in Customs. His wife, in an odd twist of Fate became the stations XO in his place. Once more Rayek had to redouble his efforts to prove himself, but within 6 months he'd managed to regain rank to Lieutenant Commander and the role of Chief of Operations. It was a joyous time for Rayek who was a new and doting father. Tess and he made plans to have a house built on the Meridian planet that the station orbited. But plans went awry when the Thinkers Inc - a recurrent threat - attacked the wormhole closing seemingly forever. Starfleet assets in the Gamma Quadrant were rallied and Tess was given a field commission to Captain, with Rayek as her First Officer. Their orders were to search the quadrant for any way to reopen the wormhole. (2399) During their search, they discovered they were being tailed by a cloaked Romulan ship. At first they thought it to be the Romulan Ambassador's escort vessel but were proved wrong when they were hailed by none other than Rayek's sister. Rayek who was on an away mission at the time, was targeted by what is believed to be a Tal'Shiar assassin. The shuttle he was returning to the ship in was sabotaged and exploded, killing a crew member. The aftermath of this attack and the investigation to find the assassin is the last thing that Rayek remembers before being found unconscious in a Federation escape pod by a Federation ship in now 2380. When questioned, his honest answers seem to be ridiculous lies. Romulus was present and personnel that he named that could vouch for him either were not in the service or had never heard of him. Medically if scanned for his quantum signature... his signature is slightly off from everything else in this dimension. |
