Mission: Into The Void
Location: The Lounge
Timeline: 2 days before arrival of new staff

The smell of spiced apple cider, pine, and peppermint wafted along the corridor as Rayek approached the Lounge. He knew from past experience that many human cultures celebrated some manner of holiday during what was termed 'winter months' on Earth. Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Yuletide, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Years - just to name a few.

Yet without his family to share the holiday, Rayek found himself dreading this festive season. He didn't truly want to be here for this officers' party, but Rayek had Tess' voice whispering in his thoughts that he needed to be more social and make friends. So he put aside his reluctance and entered the Lounge intending to make the best of a bad situation. With any luck, he'd be able to find his favorite holiday treat - candy canes.

H'orri walked in sucking on a candycane while wearing a elf costume complete with elf ears strapped to her ears. She whistled the tune of Away in a Manger. "Merry Christmas, Rayek."

Rayek looked over towards the Caitian, and quirked an eyebrow at her choice of attire and additional ears. "Jolan'tru*, H'orri. It seems you are in the festive spirit." (*hello) The Romulan noted the confection she was savoring and looked about the room to see where she might have pick it up from. Rayek noted various decorations about the room that hadn't been there the day previous. An imitation spruce tree with strings of colorful lights and garland stood in the center of the room. The tree drew his attention not because of the lights or garland but because scattered throughout here and there hooked onto several boughs were red and white striped candy canes. That was the scent of peppermint that he'd notice earlier.

H'orri noticed him looking at her candy cane and pulled one out of a pocket. "Do you know the Human Myth of the Candy Cane?"

R'elle entered wearing one of those sexy Santa Clause outfits. The kind with the skirt and the hat and low cut in the front. She didn't get a chance to let her hair down very often so she took this opportunity to relax and have some fun. Besides, she loved christmas. It was a wonderful Holiday! People tended to behave themselves more around this holiday. Not all species but humans for sure. "Greeting all! Hello Rayek! H'orri! Merry Christmas!"

Rayek's attention was drawn away from the candy canes on the Christmas tree to the one held in H'orri's hand as she queried him about some human lore. Rayek wondered if the candy cane might be offered as a prize to him if he withstood one of the scientist's social 'lectures'. Yeah, the opportunity to have a candy cane that he didn't have to 'sneak' off the tree would be worth it.

But before he could answer, the ship's other Caitian, R'elle, joined them with an equally festive outfit - though hers was far more revealing. The Romulan made sure he kept his gaze on R'elle's face as he returned her greeting with a slight nod. "Jolan'tru, R'elle. You have arrived just in time to join me in learning some ancient Human lore, H'orri was about to share." Rayek looked back to H'orri expectantly.

H'orri smiled. "Well this a very old myth tied to Christianity, a human religion. There was this candy maker, who being Christian wanted to make a candy to help teach about the birth of his Lord and Saviour Jesus the Christ. He wanted to include several symbols of the Faith in his design.

So he started making it white for the purity that faith is credited to the person as. He added red stripes to remind one of Jesus's blood which washes the sin away of said believer.

At this point it is helpful to state that sin is an archery term from a long dead Human language, it means miss the mark.

He then shaped it into the letter 'J' for the name of the one who saves, according to that religion, Jesus. And if you flip it up side down."

At this point she held up the Candy cane in her hand to show how it looks Ike a letter J and then flipped it over.

"It looks like a shepherd staff. Reminding the believers of said religion that Jesus was their Good Shepherd. Who leaves the flock of sheep to find each individual sheep who wanders.

And the priest who taught me this said that he thought it was said people forgot the story and just use it for candy and tree decorations. But as I worship the Mothers of us all, an ancient Caitian faith. I never fully understood his sadness." H'orri then walked to the tree and begans putting more candy canes on it while whistling the tune 'O Holy Night'.

Rayek listened respectfully, wondering why Saqa7, his long-time human friend, had never mentioned the religious aspect of the holiday before when she'd introduced it to him. He nodded occasionally during H'orri's explanation. It seemed reasonable. Definitely worth sitting through for a J-shaped candy. Yet afterwards, when H'orri finished speaking, rather than hand him the cane as a reward, the Caitian walked away and put it and other similar canes up on the tree. Rayek was disappointed.

Klarth walked into the lounge reluctantly. He was dressed in his uniform as usual. To him, this was just another day. But the Captain had reminded him that attendance was expected. She could force him, but she couldn't make him enjoy it. Besides S'Lace had said she might attend so it wouldn't be all bad. Klarth saw Rayek and R'elle and went over to talk to them.

"I don't understand this holiday," Said Klarth. "Why are we celebrating the birth of a failed military commander? Shouldn't we be celebrating the Romans that conquered his people?...And what does that have to do with this Santa? And how does he force Vulcan children to make toys?"

Rayek looked towards the Klingon and nodded a greeting, even as the doctor stated his confusion about the holiday. Rayek however didn't get an opportunity to respond as Klarth's statement seemed to rile the scientist Caitian.

"Okay so. First, as this holiday isn't about Saint Nicolaus of Smyrna, aka Santa. Second, Jesus was never a military Commander he never led troops. Third, the Jews, his people were already conquered several times before he was even born. Saint Nicolas was a follower of Jesus centuries after his death. He made toys and gave them.to children because of Faith and Love. As for force, that has nothing to so with this Holiday. And you wonder why some of us have issues with you Klingon." She was now too angry to decorate or whistle and walked to the bar to find eggnog.

Klarth was just as confused as before. He saw how upset he had made H'orri so he asked Rayek and R'elle, "If he wasn't a commander how did he conquer death?...And how did this Santa have transporter technology centuries before Emory Erickson invented it?"

Sensing this was going to be a powder keg of controversy, Rayek raised both hands in sign of keeping out of the conversation. Sure enough, it was H'orri who responded to the doctor's question again.

"Okay, let's go over your objections. Remember, I don't practice this ancient Human mythology. First, supposedly He conquered death by resurrection which is what Easter is about. Second, know one knows how or if Saint Nicolaus ever delivered gifts to all the children of the world all we do have evidence is he did it in the ancient Greek town now in Turkey on Earth." the Caitian pointed out.

Klarth looked very confused and asked "How did they get a town into a turkey?...Was it a very small town or a very large turkey?"

"NO Klarth! IN this case Turkey was the name of a country on Earth! As fr St Niolas or Santa Clause as he is more popularly known is said to deliver gifts to all the children on earth on christmas eve. Probably just a myth but many children still believe to this day!" R'elle said. "I can explain it to you better another time Klarth. H'orri is upset over this and I want to make sure she is alright." R'elle left the pair and walked over to the bar to talk to H'orri.

"Hey! You ok? You got pretty mad at the big, dumb klingon." she said Jokingly. "He can't help it if his people know nothing about Christmas! It means a lot to you, Christmas. It's pretty obvious. I think it's great!"

"Okay okay. Listen, he probably won't ever understand. I love Christmas it is the Birth of the God who is Love at least for Humans in the world. It is a time for all of us to think about what is best for others. To shake of the evils of war and destruction and share a moment of Peace and Love. I am fine now. Just need a synthehol rum and eggnog. Preferably Hot. That will get me whistling again."

R'elle smiled. "Good! I agree with everything you said. That's why I like it too. As a councilor, I am more ware than most of the psychological needs of the crew. Goodwill toward men is something everybody needs in my professional opinion. Of course I like the idea myself. Peace and Love are two of the greatest goals we could wish for." Se took H'orri's hand and gently squeezed it. "Don't let anyone dampen your enthusiasm for those Ideals H'orri."

After R'elle walked away. Klarth looked at Rayek and said quiet enough that only Rayek can hear, "Do you understand any of this? I've been called a Scrooge whenever I ask questions about this holiday. I looked it up and it seems he was a successful businessman who didn't understand the holiday either."

Rayek who had kept out of the conversation, just chuckled softly, before answering the Klingon. "A bit... but my experience with Christmas had been limited to decorated trees, Santa Claus, ugly Christmas sweaters and gift giving." He purposely left out candy canes, so that later if anyone noticed a few missing from the tree, he would be less likely to be a suspect.

H'orri leaned in and rubbed her nose in R'elle's cheek a very familial action. Kind of like two sisters hugging for humans. Yes, very much so." She did however hear the whispered conversation across the room and took note to respond to it after finding her drink.

R'elle smiled. She had often though of H'orri as a little sister. She was sweet, kind and had a big heart. She returned the gesture. She grabs an eggnog herself. "Spare some rum?" She asked of H'orri

H'orri found her hot eggnog and a bottle of synthehol rum. She poured some rum into the eggnog then found a spoon to stir it. She took a sip and closed her eyes then whistled the tune of 'It came upon a midnight clear.' before finally responding across the room to the Klingon.

"What you don't understand K'larth is Peace and Love. The focal point of this Holiday especially for those of us non Christians who love it. It is opposite everything you grew up thinking as good War and Conquest."

"Indeed! Peace and love! Most people like those things." R'elle said.

Unfortunately, despite the distance and the attempt at whispering, the Caitians picked up on the two men's conversation and had to comment. Rayek sighed. But it was R'elle' agreement to H'orri's words of Peace and Love that prompted a memory. Normally Rayek might have kept such to himself but he hoped to distract Klarth from reacting to the Caitians' comments. While probably meant innocently, H'orri's statement seemed almost insulting and judgmental to the equally 'war-and-conquest-raised' Romulan.

"Actually Klarth, I was mistaken.. I do know Scrooge as well. It was a 20th century musical film based on a tale by a human author named Charles Dickens." He'd watched the musical film adaptation with Tess last Christmas. While the movie had stressed the importance of peace and love and being generous - it hadn't seemed to focus on the religious aspect of the holiday either.

"Peace is good for the victors." said Klarth. "I am also reminded of two Ferengi Rules of Acquisition the first one is 'War is good for business' and the second one is 'Peace is good for business.'

Then Klarth remembered he had a question and asked his friends "I am new to this Christmas gift giving, what sort of present would tell S'Lace that I am interested in more than friendship, but not upset her Vulcan nature."

Rayek chuckled in amusement to hear the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition being quoted by a Klingon. Rayek's close friend, Lek, would be pleased to know that others quoted them as well. When Klarth asked about gift options for S'Lace - confirming the Romulan's suspicions that there had been interest on the Doctor's part - Rayek took a moment to consider. "Offer her a weighing scale. With tokens, on which you write individually the pro's and con's of you as a prospective mate. Just be sure that the scale tips in your favor."

Kalrth says, "That sounds like a wise choice. Indeed it sounds risky, but 'fortune favors the bold.' And it sounds logical which is something Vulcans can't resist."

Rayek nodded, pleased that he'd been able to help.

H'orri grunted. "Really, can you not drop your own religious beliefs and live in the Peace and Love of Christmas. Take about Victors,, acquisitions, weight and fortune and stow it. Before I decide that celebrating my favorite Human holiday with a Klingon and a Romulan is wrong and leave."

Rayek glanced over surprised and offended at H'orri's request and statement. To his perspective, he had done nothing to offend and did not deserve such attitude, nor disregard to his own culture. Her words to 'drop your own religious beliefs' were against everything that he'd been told the Federation represented - acceptance and equality of all races and species.... except of course Klingons and Romulans it seemed! What respect he'd held for the Caitian, was lost in that moment.

"Easy H'orri. I know this means a lot to you but you know as well as I do you can't force it. I love Christmas as much as you do but don't get upset at them because they don't share your beliefs. Calm down. Getting upset at them is not in the spirit of the season. C'mon. Let's just enjoy the time together and celebrate love. Unconditional love. After all, that's what it is all about isn't it?" R'elle said. "C'mon. Let's toast to peace and love for all!" She held up her glass.

Klarth appreciated R'elle trying to make peace, but the damage had already been done. Klarth blinked a few times dumbstruck at H'orri's comment. He had held his tongue as she repeatedly butted into conversations she was not meant to be a part of, but this was just too much. "Drinking is a part of Christmas, right?" he said to H'orri, and then he went over to the bar on the far side of the room to find something alcoholic and steer clear of her for a while. After he got a drink he found some other friends and started telling them a story "A few years ago Ensign Mitchell was trying to resist the advances of an Ensign Samantha. She came at him mistletoe in hand looking for a kiss. Mitchell tried to back away but ran into a Christmas tree and fell on a Christmas Tree ornament. At least that's how the story goes. It took me 3 hours of surgery to remove it from his buttock. In between screams of agony all he said was "It was a million to one shot doc, a million to one!" Klarth laughed out loud at his own story.

H'orri went silent as R'elle reminded her that love is supposed to be unconditional. She then heard the doctor's attempt at a Christmas Story. She stood. "I was wrong. So please forgive me." She stated and walked to the other side of the room. She sat there in self reflection.

R'elle let her go. It was best that H'orri think a little. Hopefully she would still be in the christmas spirit after wards. She loved H'orri and her love of christmas. However in this instance, her zeal outweighed her judgement.

Sandy finally walked into the lounge and felt the room very tense. Something was definitely out of sorts. "I am not sure as to how the different cultures would celebrate the birth of their deities, but, the day of Christmas is a very special for Earth. Betazed also has something similar to Christmas. It is a day that celebrates life in it's fullness. Yet as a child growing up, Christmas meant two very special things. The first was the birth of Jesus, and second, toys and clothes, and other items. A very special day indeed," she said as she had a slice of pumpkin pie and a glass of eggnog. "Delicious, absolutely delicious, I want the recipe's for both the pie and eggnog," she added.

"Hello Sandy! Merry christmas!" R'elle said. "Yes the eggnog is delicious. Haven't tried the pie yet but it looks good!"

"Merry Christmas to you too, R'elle. I gotta have the recipes for this. It is awesome," Sandy said to R'elle, grinning.

"Indeed. I have found that many earth dishes are good. I do love this season of giving! What about you?"
"As do I. It is a wonderful time of the year when all get together with family and friends to celebrate new life," Sandy said wolfing down another slice of pumpkin pie.

R'elle took a slice of pie and bit into it. "Mmm, oh this is good. I see what you mean Sandy. This is delicious."

Klarth walked up to her. A drink in his hand. The alcohol was improving his mood slightly. He was excited to see her because he'd been hoping to have a chance to get to know her a little better. He said to her, "Commander, you're a telepath, what am I thinking right now?"

Looking at Klarth dead in the face, "As to what you are thinking, I am not at liberty to reveal it. Neither you or anyone else has the permission to read ones mind unless so ordered by the captain and then under protest, now is that the answer you seek?" Sandy said. "Someone get me a blood wine".

R'elle smiled at Klarth's question. She was wondering if Sandy could read her thoughts? Well she could but probably wasn't. Too bad! If she did Sandy would find some decidedly carnal thoughts about the two of them. As well as thoughts about getting Sandy underneath the mistletoe and really kissing her. Over and over and over again!

"Man no one can take a joke today," says Klarth. "I thought this holiday was supposed to be fun? What I was thinking was that I'd rather go through my second Rite of Ascension with the painsticks again than endure this."

"Pain sticks? Isn't that reserved for the rites of ascension? I was under the impression that the two rows of warriors were with pain sticks ready to test a young man's metal," Sandy said, looking at Klarth.

"Yes, it is a glorious ceremony and sometimes when I am in awkward social situations," Klarth put his hands on her shoulders and made eye contact with her "I close my eyes and I imagine myself back there" then Klarth shook her to imitate an electric shock and said "Zap!" and laughed.

Still feeling sour after that unpleasantness, and with having Klarth moved on to another group and then inexplicably approaching the Betazoid pilot to challenge her to read his mind, Rayek felt inclined to just call it a night and leave. He was both baffled and embarrassed by the Klingon's request of the Betazoid officer, treating her telepathic ability like a party game. Yes. It was definitely time for him to leave.

Having learned of his own ability late in life and then having that forbidden ability be abused by those above him that knew, Rayek found he disliked using his telepathy unless absolutely necessary. So a request like Klarth's was rather offensive. The one exception to Rayek's aversion, was his sharing of minds with his wife. With her, he trusted he could always be open and himself.

It was as he thought of Tess that he realized that if she were here she would have encouraged him to stay. Tess, having grown up on Earth, enjoyed the winter holidays; and in turn, Rayek had enjoyed making his wife happy by going to all the winter activities together on the holodeck. He'd tried ice-skating for the first time last Christmas, and tobogganing too.

With that frame of mind, Rayek hoped to experience some new holiday tradition this year as well, though he was saddened to be doing so alone. Ultimately, he decided to stay and moved to take a seat at a more secluded table, away from H'orri in particular, lest his mere presence cause another scene with her. The smell of peppermint while still as sweet, was less appealing now.

"H'orri, you seem a bit depressed. Is something wrong? Are you not enjoying this wonderful feast?" Sandy asked her.

Rayek closed his eyes and hoped to sit peacefully and listen to festive music playing in the background of the room. He recognized one as it came on, since it was a favorite of Tess'. He murmured the lyrics softly as played. "Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful. So if you've no place to go... Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow." Unfortunately, singing was not a skill Rayek was proficient in.

While Rayek had his eyes closed, he thought of his son. This would have been Fvienn’s 2nd Christmas and Rayek had hoped to do so many things together with both Fvienn and Tess. Sit by an open fire and roast chestnut -like the song suggested, though he would likely leave the Yuletide singing to Tess and her perfect pitch. Wear, all three, matching ugly Christmas sweaters, while the toured the Christmas shops on the Katra’s promenade. He’d even been preparing on the Holodeck a winter playground for Fvienn, with skating, sleigh rides and snow.

H'orri still sat by herself quietly. "I was wrong. I was so wrong.” she murmured completely unaware of Sandy's query to her.

However, when Rayek opened his eyes his pleasant family dreams were pushed to the back of his mind as he couldn’t help but notice during his quick survey of the room, H’orri sitting alone. Part of him felt a twinge of satisfaction at the sight, especially since she seemed upset. It seemed only fitting that she reap what she’d sown.

Now, he hadn’t intended to be nosey, but that was a bit of a downside to the skill of lip-reading. It was useful in espionage but not so much when you wanted to just mind your own business. Her words were clear to him and he struggled with knowing that she felt some remorse.

It took him a moment to set aside his own hurt-feelings, but eventually he rose from his secluded seat, walked past the Christmas tree, deftly grabbing from its boughs two candy canes and then headed straight to the Caitian. He stopped in front of her holding out one of the canes. “Yes you were" he responded to her murmured words. "But we all make mistakes. What matters is if you’ve learned at little from it.” He handed the Christmas candy to her. “Peace?”

H'orri looked up and saw the Romulan. She stood and took the candy cane and walked back to the tree and put it back on there. "Thank you Rayek. I need a some more time." She walked to another part of the room and faced the wall. "Mothers guide this child. Guide her away from hatred, and only fighting for hunt or defense. May my life always reflect you."

For a moment, the Romulan was pleased as it seemed his gesture was accepted. But then H'orri confused him by putting it back up on the tree. Was she refusing his offering?! Her words were equally mystifying. First saying a thank you but then telling him she needed more time. He watched then as she walked to a wall and faced it. Was that more self-punishment?

Fine. if she needed time alone, she could have as much of it as she wanted! Rayek was finding this social event to be far too troublesome to have any desire to stay longer. He had his candy cane. It was enough. He peeled back it's plastic cover and snapped off a piece to savor in his mouth as he did one last tour of the room.

H'orri then walked over to the group. "Merry Christmas. I apologize for lashing out while angry. That was not very Christmas of me."

Klarth looked at H'orri and smiled and said "Come and share a drink with me and all will be forgiven."

Sandy was delirious with joy and happiness to see such festivities. Food, drink, cakes, and sweets including candy canes. And to top that off a Christmas Tree to boot. "Merry Christmas to everyone!" she shouted.

H'orri smiled. "Rayek, I would like it, since we have more then enough candy canes if you left the canes on the tree till the day we take the down. Thank you Klarth."

By the time that Rayek returned to the knot of original officers, H'orri had rejoined them. Lieutenant Risa's shout brought a slight smile to the Romulan's face. At H'orri's open request, there was a moment when the Romulan felt a stir of resentment that she had singled him out... but then the evidence was in hand (and being savored in his mouth). He shrugged before answering. "What and deny others the joy of decorating the tree again and again?" He gave a slight sigh of disappointment. "Very well, I will avoid the tree. And with that spark of joy gone... I bid you all, Jolan'tru." He gave slight nod to the Klingon only, then turned and walked to the exit.

Sandy watched as the Romulan departed and made a mental note to see him later and ask him later what was wrong and why he left the party.

H'orri frowned. "Rayek, I didn't mean for you to leave. I just . . . ..very well Jolan'tru and Merry Christmas. Darn. Even when I am trying. "

R'elle went over to H'orri. "It's ok. You tried and perhaps it just wasn't a good time for Rayek. He may have stuff going on that is bringing him down. H'orri you have a wonderful heart! Don't ever lose that! That is your finest qualities!"

H'orri smiled at R'elle's suggestion. "Thank you R'elle. All I was asking is he respect my work in decorating the tree."

"We should sing some Christmas songs not that I know any, but I'm sure the computer can display the lyrics." said Klarth.

Rayek was barely outside the Lounge having just left when Klarth's loud Klingon voice could be heard through the door, suggesting the singing of Christmas songs to the others. Rayek paused. Caroling had been something Rayek had wanted to do with Tess this year, since last year's festivities had be ruined by the Wanderer attack on Katra Station. He lingered in the hall, his head cocked, listening for if the others would pick up on Klarth's idea.

Klarth said "Computer, play a Christmas song for a singer with a deep voice like mine" The computer compiled and Klarth began singing along

"Oh Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining..."

H'orri laughed.
"If we are going to sing." She clears her throat then sings.
"
Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night!
Son of God love's pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth"
H'orri smiles.

From the other side of the Lounge door, Rayek could hear as H'orri interrupted Dr. Klarth's Christmas carol, ignoring the song already playing on the overhead speakers, to sing her own preferred song. Her singing was actually pretty good. It just would have been more appropriate if she'd waited until Klarth finished his. The Romulan shook his head and rolled his eyes. The Caitian was astoundingly self-centered - even more than he (and that was saying alot!). He wondered if it was consciously done or if she just didn't have a clue.

Rather than barge back in and defend Klarth's right to finish his song, Rayek remained outside hoping the Klingon would stand up for himself and continue his own song despite H'orri interruption. In his mind, Rayek envisioned a song-battle between the two. An odd sort of duet. The imagining brought a smirk to the Romulan's face.

R'elle just shook her head, H'orri meant well but she seemed unaware that she was interrupting other people's fun. Well H'orri and she were going to have to talk, councilor to patient. "Ahem, yes thank you H'orri. Klarth, would you like to continue your song? After all, you were singing first." She said.

Rayek couldn't quite make out the words that were being said but he recognized the Counselor's gentle and patient tones obviously used to correct someone from a behavior. He recognized it because it was used with him often enough by others when he'd been on Katra. A moment later and H'orri exited out the door in a huff. The Romulan quickly stepped aside as she left. He watched with a satisfied smirk, before turning around and entering the Lounge once more. Let's try this again.

Klarth was still drinking and talking to folks and singing songs and having a good time. He wasn't going to let H'orri ruin a perfectly good time. He laughed it off and said "I've seen Mellanoid slime worms with better manners than that Caitian."

Sandy was actually getting a little bit tipsy, walking over to R'elle, "Share a blood wine or a scotch on the rocks?" she said as she looked directly at R'elle. 'I wonder if this...nah...well but maybe' Sandy thought. Hoping she would drink with her and talk and enjoy each other's company, but that might be asking to much now.

R'elle knew where Sandy was headed and it was exactly what she hoped for. "I think a scotch would be very nice. Thank you." She said with a sexy smile. Oh yes! Finally! Sandy seemed very interested. Things were picking up, indeed!

"Then come and drink with me and we can sing Christmas carols together!" Sandy said. The entire party was lifting up the mood of all there including one very drunk Klingon. Sandy did a no-no and started to mix her drinks.

"It would be a pleasure Sandy!" R'elle said. She gave sandy a flirtatious smile. "A scotch on the rocks would be fine."

"Good one scotch on the rocks for the pretty lady and a double shot of bourbon on ice," Sandy said to the barkeep. Throwing her arm around R'elle's shoulders, she whispered in her ear, "I am getting drunk and crazy foolish. How about you?"

"Possibly dear lady! I am foolish enough to get you beneath the mistletoe." and if Sandy Looked up, she would see a sprig on mistletoe hanging above them. "You do know the tradition my dear?" R'elle said.

"Oh I know the tradition. A kiss under the mistletoe etc, etc." Sandy said laughing.

"So if you know he tradition woman, why aren't you kissing me already?" R'elle said in a playful tone. This was what she had been waiting for. She wanted Sandy to kiss her and they would take it from there.

"Well hell R'elle, don't mind if I do..." Sandy wrapped arms around r'ell and for the first time in her life she kissed her, but it was not an ordinary kiss. It was full of passion, and she deepened the kiss ald let her mind speak for her~~~Do you know how much I want to be a part of your life?~~~Sandy projected at R'elle.

R'elle kissed back "Wow Sandy! I had no idea! I've been wanting to ask you out for a while now but wasn't sure you felt the same. I'd like to have you as part of my life. Tonight could be the start of something special. " She smiled at Sandy. "Maybe we should discuss this, say back say my quarters?" She said with a smile. Truth be told she had been sweet on Sandy for a while and now, finally things had been set in motion and they were going just the way she wanted.

"Yes I think we should," Sandy said, gently squeezing R'elle's hand. Sandy had known passion but never like what she felt from R'elle. Her passion, feelings, and concern were genuine, and honest. Nothing like this did she feel from other women. They were.... let's just say they were platonic. Getting up with R'elle's hand still in her's, she got R'elle up and started to walk out. "Let's go," Sandy said softly.

With that the two exited quietly while the others continued this fun. Tonight she and Sandy would make their own fun privately.

While the two Commanders were first connecting over drinks, Rayek was tempted to go up to the tree to snag another candy cane, even though he was still savoring the sweet peppermint taste of the first, but knowing how his physiology reacted to refined sugars, Rayek knew one would be plenty. He could already feel the 'drunken buzz' beginning.

He looked about and found Klarth laughing with a group of other crewmembers. Rayek walked over and tried to sing along to the carol they were engaged in at the moment, recognizing it as one he'd heard before about a 'Good King' named Wenceslas - thankfully the words were being holographically displayed on the wall for all to see and potentially join in, but his off-key singing earned him more than a few glances. Was it really that bad that they had to stare?

Klarth put his arm around the Romulan and finished the song with him. Then he started to lead him away from the crowd saying. "Either you've had one too many or your singing is always a bit off key. But that's no matter..." Klarth has led them over to the bar to refresh their drinks. "We'll both have another and you will tell me about your lady love as I am sure she is already on your mind during this holiday."

Rayek laughed at Dr. Klarth's spot on comment about his singing ability and let the Klingon guide him away to the bar, and ordered a drink. "Jameson Whiskey. On the rocks." A method of drinking he'd picked up from a former Commander of his. The Klingon's suggestion that he tell him of Tess earned a skeptical eyebrow raise. "You want me to share with you personal things about my family? What information will you offer in exchange?"

Klarth smiled and said "This isn't an interrogation Rayek. If you don't want to talk about it you don't have to. I just thought she would be on your mind as you are far from home and unsure when and if you will get back to her."

Rayek blinked in self-realization when the Klingon called out his suspicious nature by stating that his question wasn't meant as an interrogation. "Yes, of course. I offer apologies for my rudeness. You are correct she is on my mind. I had such plans for this holiday with her and our son. Fvienn turned one in October. So while not his first Yuletide, it is the first one he can truly participate in."

"No apologies are necessary," said Klarth. "I had no idea you were a father and he is only a baby. We must get you back to your son, so you can teach him to hunt, and fight, and drive his mother crazy." Klarth said the last bit with a smile and a wink.

Rayek chuckled at the Klingon's words. "Thank you. I couldn't agree more." He raised his glass in salute. "To family!" then took a swallow of the liquor. Rayek felt warmed at his core, whether by the drink or because of pleasant thoughts of his family.

S'Lace finally arrived at the party. She was still dressed in her uniform too. She looked around the room and found Klarth. "I am relieved that you came. You know how uncomfortable I can be in large social situations...Oh hello, Lt. trLhoell. Are your injuries all healed up?"

Rayek's pleasant mood dimmed at the arrival of the Vulcan. He listened as S'Lace greeted the Klingon. Given his dislike for the cold and logical demeanor of most Vulcans, the Romulan immediately picked up key words in her speech that were not typical for her species. Relieved.. uncomfortable. Those were feeling words! Could she be another like Solluk who had some manner of medical condition that prevented her from being unemotional? Or was it a conscious choice to be less rigid than most of her people. Or was her more relaxed conversation specific to Dr. Klarth?

The Romulan dipped his head in acknowledgement of her greeting and query regarding his health. "Jolan'tru, Lieutenant S'Lace. Yes, I am nearly 100%. Dr. Klarth remarked that you'd done a fine job with the suturing."

And with that segue, "Allow me to get you and Dr. Klarth each a drink in appreciation for your assistance."

"That is not necessary. I was merely doing my job." S'Lace responded logically.

"Please, I insist. It would be remiss of me if I didn't." he exaggerated. "How about an eggnog - sans the rum if you are concerned about the alcohol?" the Romulan pressed, then turned his attention to the Klingon. "Doctor, can I get you a top up of your blood wine?"

Sensing that the Vulcan was wavering, given his implication that there was a cultural aspect to his offering, he began to slowly move away from the two - purposefully giving Klarth some time with the Vulcan 'alone' (or as alone as they could be in the middle of a party). Rayek headed towards the busiest section of the bar. If he had to wait in line for several minutes all the better. Rayek downed his whiskey and set it aside on a nearby table before stepping into queue.

S'Lace watched the Romulan leave - not having actually given the Lieutenant her answer. With him gone, she turned her attention to Dr. Klarth once more. "Are you enjoying the festivities?" she queried.

"Yes, well I didn't really want to come at all but now that I have I've been making the best of it and having a good time." Klarth let out a little laugh and said "Look at Lt. Fox over there he's drunk as a skunk" then he really laughed "the fox is drunk as a skunk."

From his place in line, Rayek could hear the Klingon's guffawing laughter, yet as expected when he glanced over there seemed to be no reaction at all from the Vulcan. Continuing his glance about, so the Klingon and Vulcan couple didn't get the impression that he was watching them, Rayek noted that the Risa and R'elle had grown rather close in the few short minutes since Klarth and he had parted their company. They were kissing under the mistletoe rather ardently.

The unexpectedness of that sight had Rayek glancing about for any potential outside source for their amorous behavior. No Orion... no Deltans - that he could see. Perhaps they'd imbibed just enough alcohol to remove previous inhibitions. Rayek could appreciate that. He'd have been just as amorous as they if his wife were present. Rayek returned his attention back to the queue he was in lest his thoughts of his wife make him melancholic once more.

The line moved slowly.

The flat expression on S'Lace's face didn't change as she looked over following Klarth's gesture towards the officer mentioned. She didn't know what was so humorous about the human's inebriated state. Nor why it was comparable to a Earth rodent with a rather notable musk gland. Was it an indication that the man, smelled? Or was it merely the rhyming that was important? Her confusion grew when Klarth repeated his simile then laughed all the harder. It took S'Lace a moment to pick up on the slight difference in his wording... and the inference that was being made. S'Lace didn't laugh but she did attempt to show her support for his attempt.

"You have a most unique wit, Doctor. But you should know by now that understanding humor is not my strength."

"Oh, you sell yourself short. You have surprised me with witty comments from time to time. And other times sarcastic comments." said Klarth.

S'Lace regarded the doctor with an assessing eye, trying to determine if it was merely the bloodwine talking or something else. "Thank you for the praise, Doctor, but I assure you humor is not my intent with such comments."

After saying such, S'Lace glanced about the room with its revelers and noted for a moment the pair of senior officers kissing beneath a sprig of Viscum album. She turned her attention back to Klarth, broaching a new topic. "I've read that gift-giving is often a part of this holiday. Is this something you are planning to participate in? If so, then perhaps we could exchange gifts?"

Klarth was surprised by this. He didn't think S'Lace would be interested in such a tradition. Or that she would want to do something that would be so typical of a couple. But he felt like he should encourage such thoughts so he smiled and said, "Sure that would be fun. Have you been hinting at what you want? Sometimes us men need to be hit over the head with such hints."

"I did not know that the activity had a guessing component to it. Since it is your gift to give, I would not presume to tell you what it should be." She paused a moment before continuing her slightly quieter tone, "I had one prepared for you.. but if there is the expectation that it be something that you had been hinting to me for then I did not understand this... so the gift will not be suitable."

Klarth said "Hints are not a requirement, in fact it is considered more meaningful if the idea is your own... So this is great. You have something for me and I have something for you already too."

The Vulcan medical officer took in this new information with a slight nod. "Then my gift should meet with your approval." She motioned for him to follow her to a wall console. "Computer. Display visual image file named 'Klarth gift' from the private files of Lieutenant S'Lace. Voice Authorization."

A moment later and a digitally edited image of both S'Lace and Klarth was displayed. The image was not a typical portrait pose. Rather the image showed a front view of Klarth seemingly working on a vague unnamed patient his hand out towards S'Lace, standing by his side, reaching for a medical tool. While at first glance, it seemed like an ordinary 'action' image of them working together; there was a slight highlighting emphasis in the coloration to the center of the image which focused on how their hands connected as S'Lace was handing over the dermal regenerator.

"I look forward to remaining by your side in the new year, Doctor. " S'Lace stated as she watched him take in the image.

Klarth was really touched by the picture. Especially the seeming acknowledgement that they were "together." He said, "Wow that is a fantastic picture. I look forward to our adventures together this year as well....And that is a good transition to my gift. I don't have it here, but I can pull up a picture of it. Computer. Display visual image of the items I replicated for S'Lace earlier today." Up came a picture of two parachutes. "I know that like me sometimes you crave some adventure, so I thought we should go skydiving on the holodeck together."

S'Lace looked over the image of the parachutes, and for a moment her lips twitched almost into a slight smile. "I will look forward to that program with you. I must admit to having had a some minor apprehension the first time I was required to do a freefall simulator at the Academy. I expect this will likewise challenge me to keep my composure. Thank you, Klarth, for such a thoughtful gift."

She then glanced over towards Rayek. "What do you make of our Romulan guest?" she asked quietly, as she noticed the Romulan glancing their way. "He seems to have befriended you much more than anyone else so far."

"Yes, no one is more surprised about it than I am," said Klarth. "I never met a Romulan you could take your eyes off of long enough to tie your shoe let alone serve along side, but I find that I enjoy his company. And he does not seem to have any ulterior motives other than a desire to be helpful while he is here and to eventually return to his home universe. And Hadenbeer has vouched for him, so that means a lot. What did you observe about him when you found him during that mission on the Rumpleteazer? Did you find him to be trustworthy?"

S'Lace considered her words a moment as she watched Romulan at the bar giving the bartender their drink order. "He was useful. Despite claiming to not know who he was, he was still able to assist in our detecting the cloaked Klingon ship after it had retrieved his escape pod. Still, I am not certain how much I trust him."

"Well, I suppose I can't blame you for caution," said Klarth. "Just try to keep an open mind about him, okay?"

The Vulcan turned her attention back to Klarth at his words and nodded slightly. "I shall - as long as likewise you keep in mind that within the Federation there is a long history of Romulans being deceptive and deceitful. Do not let yourself be taken for a fool."

"I have not forgotten that history," said Klarth.

Then, noting the Romulan leaving the bar with their drinks, she changed the subject back to his gift to her. "When should we book the holodeck for this skydiving adventure?"

A moment or two later Rayek arrived with his hands full of beverages. A bloodwine - for Klarth obviously. A tumbler of whiskey for himself, she deduced from the color and aroma. And a festive looking tall glass decorated with of a sprig of pine. Inside was dark red liquid that she wasn't immediately able to determine by the scent alone. An eyebrow rose quizzically as she wondered what the Romulan would have ordered for her that was non-alcoholic. It certainly wasn't the eggnog he'd offered to get her.

Rayek picked up on the Vulcan nurse's confusion. "Was a bit concerned that you might be vegen," many Vulcans he knew were. "and I realized my offer of eggnog was probably not so appropriate, so I got you a fruit juice instead. Hope you like cranberry."

He handed each their drink then raised his glass in salute. "To new beginnings?" he suggested as a toast since the Earth New Year was just around the corner.

S'Lace familiar with the practice of 'toasting' raised her glass slightly as well in acceptance of his suggestion - though logically she thought the adjective of 'new' was rather redundant in describing a beginning.

Elle suddenly appeared at the party on the otherside of the room. She was dressed up as Santa with a ridicous looking fake white beard on her face. She had a large white sack. Most of the chatter died down and she said in a loud voice "Ho, ho, ho. Santa Elle here with a sack full of gifts. Extra replicator rations and holodeck time for everyone!" Elle then began pulling pads out of the sack and throwing them all around the room.

One was thrown a few feet from S'Lace and with quick reflexes she caught it.

The Vulcan looked down the the PADD and activated it to see what the AI had intended with this 'gift'.

"Wow that was quick reflexes" said Klarth.

Without looking up from the PADD that she noted listed the extra credit rations and holodeck time the AI had mentioned, S'Lace answered distractedly. "Nurses require faster than average reaction times."

Also on the PADD was a digital image of the ship with what looked like the entire crew in various festive poses and costume stood out on the saucer hull while the stars winkled in the background and Santa's sleigh was in the sky above. Zooming in the image to look at the sleigh, S'Lace noted Klarth dressed in the classic Santa 'Claws' outfit seated in the backseat. The Klingon was flanked on either side by herself and Rayek, similarly dressed in green and white Elf costumes with pointed Elf shoes. Rayek had a candy cane in his mouth as he held a list named at the top as 'Naughty', while she was holding a list out to Klarth Santa that read 'Nice'.

Captain Hadenbeer in the image was wearing a festive Xmas sweater as she sat in the driver's seat of Santa's sleigh. The sleigh had the registration ID of the Rumpleteaser on one side.

The AI certainly had a lot of imagination. S'Lace handed the PADD over to Klarth. "You might appreciate this more than I."

Klarth looked at it, then turned it upside down and looked at it again. then laughed at it and handed it to Rayek. "How many have I had? I don't recall posing to that?"

Having accepted the PADD from the Klingon, Rayek looked over the image. He too laughed. "The wonders of digital editing and the imagination of an overeager AI." he commented to Klarth. Rayek then looked towards Elle. "Thank you, Elle! The image looks amazing. Think you can send me a close up of those of us in the sleigh for my personal photo PADD?" he asked. Then realizing that a gift like this should be reciprocated he considered what he could offer an AI that had access to pretty much everything.

Then it dawn on him. "To show my appreciation, please join me as my guest in the holodeck when I make use of this extra time."

Elle was happy Rayek was making time to spend with her "It's a date, she said and kissed him on the cheek"

"Well, Klarth, thank you for the company. I should head back to my quarters and continue my review of past logs." Rayek was a firm believer that knowledge was power. And he wanted to know all he could about those he would potentially be working with. "I was uncertain I wanted to be here - since it was a holiday my wife enjoyed lots and being here without her, I thought might be too difficult. But you've helped make it enjoyable." Rayek smiled to the Klingon. "I hope you and S'Lace enjoy the rest of the festivities. Jolan'tru and ... Happy Holidays."

Though she was tempted to, S'Lace didn't correct the Romulan with his phrasing (by pointing out that Vulcans do not feel enjoyment), mostly because in her case, it would be a lie. She did feel such things - though she strived to keep the emotion controlled and contained. But she was certain that Klarth had been witness to a rare smile or two from her over their time together. She did tend to be a bit lax with such when they were alone.

"Yes, thank you Rayek for the company," said Klarth. "S'Lace, Elle, let's sing that old Klingon Christmas song "I'm dreaming of a fight this Christmas. Just like the ones I used to know..."
